THE MUCH ANTICIPATED APPALACHIAN TRAIL FILM - OUR SMALL BIT TO HELP SOME "PROJECTED EFFECTS ON THE TRAIL THAT THE FILM'S RELEASE MAY HAVE ON THE TRAIL" - AND SOME OTHER ASSORTED "STUFF"
SO ... THE film was released yesterday - and here in Hiawassee, GA - the staff at the Top of Georgia Hostel and Hiking Center went to see it on opening day !
The film is based on the best selling book (which greatly increased foot traffic on the trail a decade ago). The film is expected to increase traffic on TODAY'S trail even moreso. It is projected by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy that the already crowded and stressed trail environment, shelters, privies, trail facilities and communities - will face even more pressures, crowds, and litter.
The word "is out" big time - and lots of folks who never new about the AT are Googling it now ! Is it a bad thing ? - well - WE just prefer to see it as a "thing" without a label. It's been an increasing problem for years - (not a big surprise :) . The southern end of trail here in Georgia - is host to hundreds of folks in the most bizarre states - that drop out after the first 80 miles before anyone on the rest of the trail EVER gets to see them. WE have been facing these problems for years
The trail was never meant to be a clique or a club - "America's Trail" - was meant to be just that. The trail community is a band of the coolest and most positive free spirits you will ever meet - and they WILL rise to the occasion !
Here at the Top of Georgia Hostel and Hiking Center - we are not only "hoping for the best" - we are continuing to EDUCATE folks (like we have been since our opening day on March 1, 2014) . We are conducting interesting and fun mini - seminars regarding trail basics, gear, "the hike ahead", "Leave No Trace" practices - and the favorite - "Sir-Packs-Alot's 10 Golden Rules to Hiking the Appalachian Trail".
We conduct "Appalachian Trail School" programs (6 hr. courses ) - that give you lots of IN DEPTH knowledge and refreshing perspectives on the hiking the trail from our proprietor - (and Triple Crown hiker) Bob "Sir-Packs-Alot" Gabrielsen. The Appalachian Trail School schedule is (usually) - the first and third Saturdays of every month EXCEPT March and April.
We "practice what we preach" ! All of our staff ARE hikers, we all follow "Leave No Trace Practices", we use the "Sir-Packs-Alot Preferred Gear" that we sell - and we strive to be restful place that hikers enjoy. It's not that hard to be neat on the trail and to be "Bear and Mice Aware". Get out on the trail and give it a try.
